Galatians 6:9 Gives Us The Power To Overcome Racial Trauma

Trying to live a good life can be hard sometimes, especially when it comes to dealing with racism and discrimination. Just seeing injustice can harm us. So what can we do when we get tired of it all?

Galatians 6:9 reminds us, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” But what happens when the weariness seems to be too much to handle?

There’s much grief living in our bones. Our ancestors’ sorrow and rage mixed with the exhaustion of anti-Blackness we experience regularly is also known as Racial Trauma

Racial Trauma is caused by experiencing or witnessing acts of racially based physical, emotional, or psychological violence. Whether a microaggression or blatant racism, Racial Trauma is anti-Black spiritual warfare.

Racial Trauma can cause ongoing mental health issues, difficulty concentrating, lack of confidence, hypervigilance, issues with digestion, insomnia, and imposter syndrome.

Overcoming Racial Trauma takes courage, faith, and discipline.

The first step is acknowledging we’ve done nothing to deserve hateful treatment from anti-Black systems. The second is knowing we’re worthy of healing

Healing from anti-Blackness will ask us to rage, grieve, and face parts of ourselves we might be afraid of. At the root of our healing is love, abundance, and knowing we’re more powerful than any system working to oppress us.

Overcoming Racial Trauma is lifelong work. Our healing journey should consist of routines that center caring for our bodies, spiritual wellness, and projects that align us with community and the unique gifts Spirit has assigned each of us.

Most importantly, overcoming anti-Blackness is acknowledging that while anti-Blackness is the antagonist within our narrative, it is not our story.

Let’s live so freely that we permanently write anti-Blackness out of our lives.
